Hi. My name is Sarah.
If you’re here, you’re probably where I once was—searching for light at the end of the tunnel after discovering my daughter’s many food allergies—to milk, egg, and nearly all the tree nuts.
I hoped desperately that she would outgrow them. I hoped someone, somewhere, would find a cure. I felt both despair and hope at the same time. I was so overwhelmed.
Our allergist at the time simply said to avoid everything and “come back next year” for retesting.
I was the parent who made Excel charts to track my daughter’s annual skin prick test numbers and blood test values, hoping desperately that they were downtrending. I would spend hours online searching for stories of other parents whose kids outgrew their allergies. What age did they outgrow them? Is it possible to outgrow milk, egg, or nut allergies? I was basically searching for hope.
Discovering oral immunotherapy (OIT) changed everything for us. It gave us that hope, and it gave us answers. This space is where I share our journey.
Why I Created OIT Mama
I created OIT Mama to help spread the word about oral immunotherapy, to make the journey less overwhelming, and most of all, to help you advocate for your child’s allergy treatment.
I wish I had known about OIT earlier. Now that I do, I want to tell every allergy parent I can find—because no one told me. Not one of the three allergists we initially saw.
Here, you’ll find:
• Simple explanations of OIT
• Real-life experiences
• What daily life actually looks like during treatment
This isn’t medical advice—that should always come from your allergist. This is one parent sharing what it’s really like.
A Little About Me
Despite working as a physician assistant in emergency medicine, nothing prepared me for navigating food allergies as a parent.
This space brings both perspectives together—medical understanding and real-life experience.
What OIT Has Meant for Our Family
OIT hasn’t been a walk in the park. There have been setbacks, missed doses, and moments of doubt.
But it has also meant things we once thought were impossible—birthday parties without fear, eating cake and pizza and ice cream—and giving our kids a sense of normalcy we once thought was out of reach.
We would choose it again and again without hesitation.
If you’re at the beginning of this journey, I see you and know exactly how it feels.
There is light at the end of the tunnel.
